Dear All,

Trading Standards have just made me aware of a COVID related scam –

Texts claiming to be from NHS inviting people to apply for a Covid Passport, requesting personal details and bank details to pay a £4.99 fee.

Please be aware that the NHS / Scottish Government do not charge a fee for any Covid vaccinations or Covid passports

The NHS will never ask for bank details and the vaccine is free.

Contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve been the victim of a scam and report it to Police Scotland via 101 or Contact Us form.

I would refer you to the following bulletins for up to date advice on current scams:

STOP
If you receive a request to make an urgent payment, change supplier bank details or provide financial information, take a moment to stop and think.

CHALLENGE
Could it be fake? Verify all payments and supplier details directly with the company on a known phone number or in person first.

PROTECT
Contact your business’s bank immediately if you think you’ve been scammed and report it to Police Scotland.

"Yes I can confirm that one! My first effort to download the passport by the official channels failed as I had trouble taking a current photo that it would accept. The fake text then popped up a day or so later, looking quite credible. Luckily, the £4.99 fee instantly made the scam clear, so I cancelled before giving any bank details. What is just as worrying, though, is to understand how the scammers knew I had been trying - unless it was just pure opportunist coincidence"
