Normal topicNewington Safe Routes

Newington Safe Routes is a group of Edinburgh residents who want to create safe active travel routes through our neighbourhood.

Its aim is to establish a safe, low pollution route between Cameron Toll and the Meadows, enabling those using active travel methods – walking, cycling, using a wheelchair or other mobility aids – to travel around or through the neighbourhood. This will enable local residents to exercise safely, travel around or through the area easily and improve their access to local shops and other amenities.

So far the group has developed a route proposal and shared it with key stakeholders like the council, community councillors and others. It is currently gathering support for its ideas. In the future, it would like to work with other residents and groups to refine its plans.

The group wants to take advantage of planned infrastructure, such as upgraded crossings on Grange Road, and propose new interventions, such as modal filters, to create a protected route between Cameron Toll and the Meadows. The safe route will:

  • Enable local children to get to school and nursery
  • Provide a safe way for residents to reach Cameron Toll shopping centre
  • Enhance access to local shops and businesses

More information is available at the Newington Safe Routes website and on its Twitter feed.
