Over the last couple of days, a number of members and residents have been in touch with me, having received a letter from a Mr Chow of Grange Road, inviting them to join "Nextdoor The Grange", saying there are already 800 posts in the Grange area of the website.

We know nothing about this website https://nextdoor.co.uk/ which claims "Nextdoor is the best way to stay informed about what’s going on in your neighbourhood—whether it’s finding a last-minute babysitter, planning a local event, or sharing safety tips. There are so many ways our neighbours can help us, we just need an easier way to connect with them.".

We continue to endorse and support Safeland, only.

However if anyone is genuinely in contact with Mr Chow and impressed with Nextdoor, then please tell us here (not to me).

This is rising again. If you receive correspondence, addressed to you, from someone local you don't know (they are probably genuine - but that doesn't seem to mean they sent it!), think about it :

" ‘Nextdoor’ is a genuine app, but it has very mixed reviews and its business model is opaque. It is a commercial venture and it is not clear how it makes its money. We encountered it last year, and there was a post on our web forum (this!). There have been examples where people have claimed that, once they joined, their names have been used, without their explicit permission, in subsequent letters to their neighbours to encourage those neighbours to join. This has the flavour of a pyramid sales scheme.

There are schemes that we endorse, such as Safeland. We also note that a number of local neighbours have set up WhatsApp groups for their street, including the ones in Fountainhall Road and Grange Loan, and these tend to be more immediate and trustworthy as you tend to know all the participants."

We continue to endorse and support Safeland, only.

We continue to take this position ...

Nextdoor is a legitimate social media app, and apparently useful for some ... however, on joining, you can find you trigger a postal invite to 150 (one hundred and fifty) neighbours without really trying ...

We get queries about it quite often.
