Telefonica UK is consulting ahead of its proposed planning application for a new base station in the steeple of Marchmont St Giles church to improve 2G, 3G and 4G coverage and to provide a 5G coverage solution. The church is at 3 Kilgraston Road EH9 2DW.

The proposals include:

• Six antennas;
• Removal of existing timber louvres and installation of new GRP replicas;
• Two equipment cabinets (one internal, one external);
• Ancillary development

The proposed design is shown in these planning drawings and the letter inviting comments from Community Councils is available.

The full planning application will be posted on the planning page of our website when available and members with postcodes EH9 2D_ will be notified by email and invited to comment.

The full planning application has now been submitted as 20/01018/FUL, together with the application for listed building consent 20/01015/LBC. These applications will replace the applications granted in 2018 as 17/05112/FUL and 17/05114/LBC. The changes relate to the requirement for the antennas to support 5G mobile services but will have no effect on the external appearance of the church. The last date for comments to the Planning Department of the Council is 3 April 2020.

The planning application 20/01018/FUL, together with the application for listed building consent 20/01015/LBC, was granted in April 2020.

There is now a new proposal, for an upgrade “to provide improved 2G/3G/4G network services and to establish a new 5G coverage solution in the area”. The mobile infrastructure company, Cornerstone, has appointed Galliford Try to act as its agent for the upgrade work and the agent expects to submit applications for planning permission and listed building consent for new configurations of antennas and ground-level cabinets.

The previous application was for the antennas to be contained wholly within the tower of the church. This new application seeks permission for eight antennas to be installed externally on the tower, “face-mounted and wrapped in vinyl to match stonework”.

The Marchmont Sciennes Community Council (MSCC) has been consulted about this proposal, prior to the planning application being lodged. The letter to MSCC can be read here, together with the drawings that are expected to accompany the planning application.

When the planning application is validated and made available by the Council, it will be added to the table of applications on our web page and that will show the closing date for comments by the public.
