Message from householder :

"Jewellery and silverware were taken, but they did not find the car keys, credit cards or front door key to enable them to take larger items. We now have the task of trying to put values on what was taken. We suggest to other members to take photos of valuable items if they have not already done so. We do NOT unfortunately have photos of the older items and will now have to battle with the insurance company on values, you cannot value sentimentality however"

If the value is substantial it could be worth appointing your own loss adjuster (briefed to maximise your claim) rather than the insurer's one (briefed to m inimise your claim). Both paid by results against their brief!
