Plans have been submitted for the new primary school to be built in Canaan Lane. The design is for a primary school roll of 462 and a nursery of 80. The proposals are to demolish the Oaklands Care Home to make way for the new building, which will house two streams of P1 - P4 pupils, and a nursery. Deanbank House is already in use by South Morningside primary school, and will be refurbished to house the P5 - P7 pupils. This diagram shows the concept of the site layout.

The site is on the western edge of the Grange conservation area, on the north side of Canaan Lane, west of Woodburn Terrace, as shown here.

The detailed plans can be viewed on the Council's planning portal for the demolition of Oaklands and for the new building and refurbishment of Deanbank House. The design statement can be viewed here as:

These contain architects' visualisations for the new building showing the primary school entrance and the nursery entrance.

Comments or objections should be submitted to the Council via its planning portal by 8 March 2019 for the demolition of Oaklands and by 15 March 2019 for the new school.

All planning applications in the Grange can be viewed via the planning pages on our website.

Information event: Wednesday 20 February 2019

The Council's plan is for the new school to be open for August 2021. Details are available from the Council's website. This includes this map of the catchment area for the new school, which includes all of the Astley Ainslie Hospital site and therefore the properties that will be built there when it is redeveloped.

An information event will take place on Wednesday 20 February 2019 to provide affected parents and guardians, as well as members of the community, an opportunity to see what is proposed. The event will take place at Deanbank House (South Morningside Primary School P1-P2 building) on Canaan Lane (35 Canaan Lane, EH10 4SG) between 4pm and 6.30pm. You are welcome to drop-in at any time.

The Council's Development Management Sub-Committee will consider the report from the Planning Department at its meeting on 6 November. The report is available on the Council's portal at 19/00435/FUL (click on 'View' beside "DM SUB COMMITTEE REPORT"). The report recommends that the proposal be granted. The summary states:

"The proposal complies with the Local Development Plan, with the exception of Policy Env 6 (b) in regards to the loss of trees. However, this departure is justified and the scheme of replanting will mitigate [] the loss of character and amenity provided by the existing trees. The proposal also complies with the relevant non-statutory guidance.

"The proposal is acceptable in principle and is of a high standard of design, enhancing the character and appearance of the Grange Conservation Area. There will be no impact on the amenity of neighbours and will have no detrimental impact on road safety. No material considerations outweigh this conclusion."
