The Grange Association has lodged an objection to the application for extensions to this property, which is one of a pair of pre-1820s villas on the north side of Canaan Lane. The proposals would close the gap with the neighbouring property from over 4m to 1m and would employ non-traditional materials for the first floor extension cladding, out of character with the original buildings and inconsistent with the Grange Conservation Area Character Appraisal. The full text of the objection is here, and the details of the application can be found on the Council's web portal by clicking on the link in the left-hand column for the property concerned here

This application was refused on 27 July 2018. The handling report noted:

"Taking account of LDP policies, the Grange CACA and non-statutory guidance, the proposed design and form of the side extensions and the rear extension and their choice of materials is not compatible with the character of the existing building. Their proposed flat roofed form would be particularly discordant in juxtaposition to the existing pitched, slated roofscape and the combination of materials is jarring and unacceptable and not appropriate for the building or this historic environment. Cumulatively, the proposals would adversely change the character of this original villa.

"The resultant building would not be in character with the scale and spacing of surrounding properties or the rhythm of the street. The eastern extension would reduce the gap between the property and its neighbour from 4.7 metres to 1.4 metres. This would not be consistent with the Grange CACA and its characteristic separation and rhythm of buildings and spaces. The proposal would not therefore preserve or enhance the character of the Grange Conservation Area."
